Abstract
An analysis of the professional activity of Félix Sarria, a coachbuilder and gilder from Lima during the last quarter of the 18th century. Our primary source of information will be the lawsuit filed against him regarding his master coachbuilder examination. Based on this document, we will examine his professional training as a gilder, his examination as a master coachbuilder, and the carriages he produced. This allows us to paint a picture of the coachbuilding industry in Lima at the end of the viceroyalty, a time when this craft was experiencing a crisis. Sarria’s lawsuit provides evidence of this crisis and sheds light on the workings of the profession, the professional rivalries within this sector, the types of carriages produced, the clients who sought his services, and other aspects of the art of coachbuilding.
