Abstract
The text seeks to investigate the different dimensions of the notion of maritorio, understanding it as an emerging category within academic studies and the social struggles of different peoples and communities in Latin America. The information is based on fieldwork carried out between 2020 and 2022 in the Chiloé Archipelago, in Chilean Patagonia. It is recognised that the emergence of maritorios is heir to categories such as territory and territoriality, born out of the conflicts and tensions resulting from the expansion of capitalism and global trade. Nevertheless, the maritorio offers new opportunities to discuss these categories and give them new meanings, in contexts where the relationship between communities and biomes with a predominance of maritime and aquatic bodies is fundamental.
