Abstract
At the beginning of the XX century, Francisco Perales Valverde undertook archaeological excavations near Baena, where a part of the Roman forum and some private buildings of the Roman town of Iponuba appeared. Two female fi gures, one of them with the portrait of Livia, and series of Julio-Claudian togates called the attention of the Royal Academies of History and Fine Arts. Amador de los Ríos was sent to make a report of the ruins and excavated materials, of which two hundred and sixty five archaeological objects were bought by the Museo Arqueológico Nacional. The recovery of historical documents and the joint study of the sculptures and the epigraphic works of the Hill of Minguillar permits the reconstruction of the process of their creation and provides new understanding of the causes that could have driven the inhabitants of a city that reached the municipality at time of Flavians to erect commemorative statues of members of the imperial family in the days of Tiberius and Claudius.
