Toxicidad y racismo ambiental. Resistencia mapuche frente al Vertedero Boyeco, La Araucanía, Chile (1992-2016)

Abstract

Este trabajo estudia el caso de resiste ncia y participación social de las comunidades mapuche pertenecientes al territorio ancestral de Boyeco frente a la instalación del vertedero homónimo, el cual estaría operativo desde el año 1992 hasta 2016. La imposición vertical e inconsulta de este proyecto repercutió gravemente en la salud, cultura, economía y entorno ambiental, con impactos que perduran hasta hoy en las comunidades . Ello dio lugar a diferentes etapas de organización social y comunitaria, así como a la aplicación de estrategia s socio-jurídicas y métodos de protesta para incidir políticamente , gestionar a corto plazo dichos impactos y exigir la reparación de los daños ausados. A través de una metodología cualitativa de análisis de prensa y docmentos producidos por las comunidades en resistencia , revisión bibliográfica y testimonios escritos y orales de dirigencias mapuche, se realiza este acercamiento a Boyeco como ejemplo paradigmático de territorialidades sacrificadas, pero también de resiliencia y lucha por la justicia ambiental y territorial.El artículo evidencia cómo las experien ias de resistencia ante la mercantilización y depredación del territorio y sus habitantes, protagonizadas por las comunidades mapuche de Boyecoy de otros territorios afectados por prácticas similares de racismo ambiental, reforzarían la cohesión comunitaria y las formas propias de organización y protesta , vigntes a día de hoy.

This article examines the processe s of resistance and social participation of Mapuche communities from the ancestral territory of Boyeco in response to the establishment of the Boyeco Landfill (1992–2016). T he unilateral and non-con sultative imposition of the project produced severe and lasting impacts on health, culture, local economies, and the environment. This gave rise to different stages of social and community organization, as well as the use of socio-legal strategies and protest methods to exert political influence , mitigate immediate impacts, and demand reparation the damags caused.Through a qualitative methodology that includes bibliographic review, the analysis of press, documents produced by the resisting communities and oral and written testimonies from Mapuche leaders, this research approaches Boyeco as a paradigmatic example of sacrificed territorialities, but also of resilience and the fight for environmental and territorial justice. This paper shows how these experiences of resistance against the commodification and exploitation of the territory and its inhabitants —led by Mapuche communities of Boyeco and other territories affected by similar practices of environmental racism—have strengthened community cohesion and their own forms of organization and protest, which remain active to this day
