Abstract
Based on the clothing used in the juegos de cañas (game of reeds), this paper analyzes the cultural relations between Muslims and Christians in the Iberian Peninsula (XV-XVI Centuries). Its purpose is to reassess the importance that material culture has for the understanding of history, and it takes as a reference the characteristic clothes of the Christians who dressed “as Moors” to participate in the game of reeds: almaizar (gauze veil worn by moors), marlota (Moorish tunic), capellar (Moorish hooded cape), and borceguíes (leather boots). The detailed study of these pieces under the shelter of the found patterns together with their presence in documents of the time, leads to an unexpected finding closely related to microhistory, as it is, on the one hand, the role that the material culture has in the understanding of history and, on the other hand, the coincidences between communities, until now, understood as antagonistic.
