Nuevos datos sobre la cronología de la deductio de augusta firma Astigi y sobre sus colonos veteranosa

Abstract

Damos a conocer una inscripción hallada en el territorio de la colonia Augusta Firma Astigi (Écija) y fechada en los primeros decenios del s. I d.C. que menciona a un tal Valerius Maxumus, de la tribu Papiria, como eme(ritus) ex Legione Classica. Se trata del epitafio de un colono fundacional. Argumentamos la identificación de la Legio en que militó con la XXX Classica (de Octaviano), o con la XVII Classica (de Marco Antonio) y su posterior participación en las Guerras Cántabras. Como ninguna de tales legiones sobrevivió a la reforma del ejército ultimada por Octaviano en 25 a.C., planteamos que la deductio deAugusta Firma no tuvo lugar en 14 a.C. como habitualmente se mantiene, sino en 24-22 a.C. y a cargo del legado de la Ulterior Publio Carisio, deductor también de Augusta Emerita. Por eso ambas colonias son las únicas en Hispania adscritas a la tribu Papiria. También aportamos una nueva lectura de CIL II2/5, 1284, el epitafio de otro veterano hallado en las cercanías, proponiendo que, con anterioridad a su centurionado en las legiones VIª y IVª, habría militado en la Legio Martia.-------------------------------------------------------------------This paper presents an inscription found in the territory of the colony Augusta Firma Astigi(Écija) and dated in the early decades of the first century AD. It mentions a certain ValeriusMaxumus, of the Papiria tribe, as eme(ritus) ex Legione Classica. It is the epitaph of a foundingveteran settler. We argue that he militated in the Legio XXX Classica (under Octavian) or in the Legio XVII Classica (under Mark Anthony) and then participated in the Cantabrian Wars. Asno such legions survived to the army reform finalized by Octavian in 25 BC, we propose that the deductio of Augusta Firma did not took place in 14 BC, as is commonly supposed, but in 24-22 BC under supervision of the Legate of Hispania Ulterior Publius Carisius. He was thefounder of Emerita Augusta also, so both colonies are the only cities in Hispania assigned to the Papiria tribe. We also provide a new reading of CIL II2/5, 1284, the epitaph of anotherveteran that was found nearby, and suggest that prior to becoming a centurio of the VIth and the IVth legions, he would have fought in the Legio Martia.
