Abstract
The profound changes in the interpretation and use of vernacular architecture taking place during the first decades of the 20th century ¿ from spheres as different as the international exhibitions or the works of totalitarian or nationalist nature ¿ modified the way in which the dwelling in urban and rural environments was built and understood. The work of the Instituto Nacional de Colonización shows the tensions and importance of this development in the evolution of contemporary architecture in Spain.
