Abstract
The recognition of access to widow's pensions for common-law couples has been a significant step forward in terms of the moral and religious determinism that previously placed this type of union in an inferior category. However, such recognition has required subsequent legal reforms and the intervention of the courts in order to resolve a whole series of controversies that have revolved around same sex couples, gender violence, the Roma minority, common children, and registration obligations. All of this has highlighted the practical difficulties involved in removing barriers to access to widow's pensions for more uxorio couples.
