Abstract
On September 8, 1883, the first issue of the newspaper El Álbum de la Mujer. Ilustración Hispano-Mexicana was published in Mexico, promoted by its founder and director, the Spanish writer Concepción Gimeno. The newspaper filled an existing void in the nineteenth-century Mexican feminist press and fostered cross-cultural connections between Mexico and Spain. In addition, it made possible the advancement of a shared feminist ideology, in which demands for equal opportunities for women in the artistic system. This article examines the feminist discourse that the newspaper promoted in its articles on art theory and criticism, which would influence the process of transformation and construction of female identities in both countries.
