Abstract
Conception Arenal was a Spanish pioneer advocate of the rights of women. Her thought was premised on a simple maxim"If women have the same duties as men, they are also entitled to enjoy the same rights". Her work equally stands as very advanced in her profession of faith on a criminal law philosophy aimed at attaining the social reinsertion of the criminal, thus overcoming the retributive and preventive commonplaces of her epoch. Both lines of her thought are addressed in this essay.
