Las modelos de los retratos mitológicos: ¿arquetipo o desafío para la sociedad del siglo XVIII?

Abstract

Los retratos mitológicos realizados en el siglo XVIII permiten analizar el papel que adquirió la mujer como modelo en el ámbito artístico. Las asimilaciones que se realizaron con los diferentes personajes mitológicos de la Antigüedad clásica responden, en su mayoría, a cuestiones relacionadas con la clase social de cada una de las mujeres representadas. Este aspecto posibilita valorar en qué medida la mujer fue partícipe de la sociedad del momento, si adquirió cierto grado de libertad y en qué condiciones se llevó a cabo esta autonomía. Además, con este estudio se pretende destacar cómo se recurrió a la Antigüedad clásica en la pintura del siglo XVIII y cómo, de esta manera, el mundo antiguo se convirtió en un instrumento de modernización que afectó, no solo al ámbito artístico, sino también al desarrollo histórico-social del momento.

Mythological Portraits made in the 18th century allow us to analyze the role that women acquired as models in the artistic field. Assimilations that were made with the different mythological characters from Classical Antiquity respond, for the most part, to issues related to the social class of each of the women represented. This aspect makes it possible to assess to what extent women participated in the society of the time, if they acquired a certain degree of freedom and under what conditions this autonomy was carried out. Furthermore, this study aims to highlight how Classical Antiquity was used in 18th century painting and how, in this way, the ancient world became an instrument of modernization that affected, not only the artistic field, but also the historical-social development of the moment.
