Abstract
This is the analysis of the cover of an eighteenth-century manuscript, “Panegíricas Décadas Zacatecanas Segunda Década, 1791-1800”, of unquestionable historical and literary value. The religious symbolism in the work of the author, Joseph Mariano de Bezanilla, are part of the religiosity developed through the centuries of colonial rule in northern New Spain. The literary text and the cover are a symbolic phenomenon conceived as a whole. It highlights the virtues of the Virgin Mary and the Christian religion in general and uses two types of symbolism, mystical or symbolic, and the enlightened or rationalist thinking. In the search for the sacred meaning and the Divine essence, Bezanilla utilizes a mythical-religious symbolism and a rational aesthetic.
