Viajeros entre Europa y América en el siglo XIX: la percepción del otro

Abstract

La literatura de viajes ha resultado ser una fuente fundamental para estudiar las percepciones de un colectivo sobre sí mismos y sobre los otros. Partiendo de este recurso, este texto analiza, en primer lugar, las visiones ofrecidas por los viajeros europeos y estadounidenses sobre el mundo andino y, en segundo lugar, la propia percepción de los latinoamericanos sobre sus sociedades, en comparación a otros espacios que consideraban más avanzados. Ambos discursos, en un sentido u otro, ayudaron a conformar un complejo de inferioridad cultural en el imaginario colectivo andino. No obstante, esta investigación plantea también el cuestionamiento de dicho complejo, pues, en un contexto de amenazante imperialismo, las élites políticas e intelectuales latinoamericanas se preocuparon por "occidentalizar" sus sociedades y asegurar que ellos también eran modernos.

Travel literature has proved to be a fundamental source for studying the perceptions of a collective about themselves and others. Based on this resource, this paper analyses, firstly, the visions offered by European and North-American travellers about the Andean world and, secondly, Latin Americans' own perception of their societies, in comparison to other contexts they considered themselves more advanced. Both discourses, in one sense or another, helped to shape a complex of cultural inferiority in the Andean collective imaginary. However, this research also questions this complex, because, in a context of threatening imperialism, Latin American political and intellectual elites were concerned with "westernizing" their societies and ensuring that they were modern too.
