Una mirada hacia Cuba en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX desde la colección fotográfica del ingeniero militar y arqueólogo Santiago Moreno Tovillas

Abstract

El ingeniero militar y arqueólogo Santiago Moreno Tovillas, uno de los pioneros de la arqueología en España, estuvo destinado entre los años 1858 ¿ 1867 en Cuba donde desarrolló interesantes labores en los campos de la ingeniería y la arquitectura. Durante su estancia en la Mayor de las Antillas realizó excursiones a cuevas y parajes que fotografíó, así como de fósiles que fue recogiendo fruto también de su interés por la paleontología. Esta colección de fotografías a las que se suman distintas carte de visite enviadas a sus familiares, obra de fotógrafos de gran relevancia como Charles DeForest Fredericks, con anotaciones manuscritas propias, son fuentes gráficas y documentales que manifiestan la experiencia de su vida en la isla y, en la actualidad, un testimonio visual de Cuba en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX.

The military engineer and archaeologist Santiago Moreno Tovillas, one of the pioneers of archeology in Spain, was stationed between 1858 - 1867 in Cuba where he developed interesting work in the fields of engineering and architecture. During his stay in the Greater Antilles, he made excursions to caves and places that he photographed, as well as fossils that he also collected as a result of his interest in paleontology. This collection of photographs to which are added various carte de visite sent to their relatives, the work of highly relevant photographers such as Charles DeForest Fredericks, with their own handwritten annotations, are graphic and documentary sources that express the experience of his life on the island and, at present, a visual testimony of Cuba in the second half of the 19th century.
