Abstract
In this essay I will explore Negri's politics of community by drawing upon his analysis of the notion of multitude. To that effect, I will, first of all, discuss Negri's identification of the plane of immanence in the origins of European modernity. In this part, I will focus on Spinoza's ontology and in particular, on Negri's re-articulation of Spinoza's contituent power as the conceptual basis upon which the notion of multitude relies. Second, I shall argue that Negri envisages posmodern theory in terms of the rejection of both the modern order of sovereignty and the transcendental ideal of power as influenced by the May '68 upheaval in France. On these bases, I will then delve into Negri's social ontology in order to account for his take on the telos of the common. Finally, I will conclude that Negri succeeds unlike any other postmodern philosopher at putting forward a potentially functional postmodern political theory.
