Abstract
Awareness of the mutual interaction existing between the well-being of the human organism, the natural environment and the built environment has always been well known; throughout the ages, builders have been confronted with the experimentation of constructive expedients and technological devices useful for improving the relationship between man and his living space. Rules designed to improve the quality of living through ante litteram technological systems and specific typological adaptations can be traced as much in the precepts handed down by architectural treatises and more recent manuals as in buildings from different eras, precious witnesses to the substantial evolutionary continuity of technology. The contribution proposed here intends to highlight the relevance of some air conditioning principles elaborated since ancient times in a few selected exempla highlighting the possibility of recovering ancient principles and technologies by adapting them to the contemporary practice of restoration and functional reconversion.
