Abstract
This paper argues that, although the doctrine of original sin is partially absent from the political texts of the great authors known as contractarians (Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau), each of them nevertheless holds a position on the subject—whether presuming it, omitting it, or rejecting it—and that these positions influenced their respective political theories. Although the works analyzed here belong to a time of decline of faith as a source of knowledge, the cultural environment had not completely abandoned Christianity, as evidenced by the reference these authors make to religion.
