Abstract
This essay explores social action through music through the case of Libertad, an Afro-rural impoverished community, victim of the armed conflict in the Colombian Caribbean. The chapter critically studies the scope of sustainability in this type of initiatives, located in music ecosystems where violence is a daily variable of consideration. Since 2015, the actions of Liberteño musicians and their focus on creating a culture of peace showed the potential of music to strengthen the social fabric. However, when the pressure of war increased, Liberteño musicians established a clear limit of involvement when their lives were directly threatened. This, stopped community leaders from their trans- formative cultural agendas. Although Liberteño musicians showed progress in community organization during a decade, the disparity of forces between armed actors and local initiatives has meant that, when the former finds the opportunity to advance violent actions, the sustainability of the music ecosystem and the social fabric, as a whole, blur and falter.
