A propósito de la gestión de los residuos urbanos en Hispania

Abstract

Definido el concepto de residuo y tras una primera aproximación al problema de su gestión en las ciudades clásicas, este trabajo analiza, a partir de los pocos datos disponibles, los sistemas aplicados en algunas ciudades romanas de Hispania para el tratamiento de los desechos urbanos. Se observa como, ya desde el momento de su fundación, los núcleos urbanos se dotaron de los mecanismos adecuados para dar respuesta a unas necesidades urbanisticamente previsibles. Los diversos modelos de gestión aquí identificados responden tanto a factores topográficos como demográficos y evolucionan paralelamente a las profundas transformaciones que experimentaron las ciudades hispanas.------------------------------------------------------------------------The concept of rubbish is defined and, following an initial review of the problem of rubbish management in Classical cities, this study uses the few available sources of data to analyze the systems used in some of the towns of Roman Hispania for the treatment of urban rubbish. It is observed how, from the moment of its foundation, the urban centres enjoyed adequate systems for most fotseeable circumstances. The different models of management identified here developed in response to topographic and demographic circumstances, and developed in tandem with the profound transformation of the Hispanic cities themselves.
