Abstract
The definitive cathedral of Guadalajara in the diocese of New Galicia began in the last third of the 16th century, essentially completed in 1618. Among the staff in charge of the management of the work, the name of Juan de Alcántara is located during the first construction phase, holding the position of architect and foreman of the church. Despite being one of the most outstanding masters of the time in that territory, the known data about his participation in the construction work is reduced, and somewhat vague about those related to his identity. Based on these and other new documentary news, an approach has been made to rectify his figure, which has allowed us to expand the information about the beginning of the building, as well as to analyze and clarify aspects of his intervention and professional trajectory.
