Abstract
VIOFEK is a biomedical software designed on the MATLAB platform (version 9.4, R2018a) with six coherently integrated "functions" (main and/or nested scripts) in a versatile interface for modeling and optimally fitting eyelid kinematics. In this software, based on the electromyography of the orbicularis oculi (OO, active agonist force during the eyelid closing phase) and the experimental recording of the eyelid position, three phenomenological models are automatically implemented and their corresponding computational algorithms executed. Through successive iterations and varying the free parameters defined in the models, the program manages to fit the experimental eyelid position curve with the resulting theoretical curves. Thus, the VIOFEK software provides us with a series of parameters (elasticity, viscosity, moment of inertia) useful for the exhaustive control of eyelid kinematics. These parameters are essentially biomechanical markers that serve as quantitative functional correlates of eyelid movement and are obtained thanks to a biomechanical analogy and phenomenological modeling that underpin the workflow of this software (see Figure 1). VIOFEK also allows simulating the dynamics of the levator palpebrae superioris muscle (LPS, active agonist force during the eyelid opening phase but physiological antagonist of the OO muscle), ensuring a more realistic modeling. VIOFEK software operates autonomously using the "MATLAB Runtime" application, which allows the execution of MATLAB files on computers without the need for an installed version of MATLAB, thus offering a user-friendly graphical interface with an easily accessible, "friendly," and easy-to-use environment.
VIOFEK es un software biomédico diseñado sobre la plataforma de MATLAB con seis “funciones” (scripts principales y/o anidados) coherentemente integradas en una interfaz versátil para la modelación y el ajuste óptimo de la cinemática palpebral. En este software, partiendo de la electromiografía del orbicularis oculi (OO, fuerza activa agonista durante la fase de cierre del párpado) y del registro experimental de la posición palpebral, se implementan automáticamente tres modelos fenomenológicos y se ejecutan sus correspondientes algoritmos computacionales. Por iteraciones sucesivas y variando los parámetros libres definidos en los modelos, el programa consigue ajustar la curva de posición palpebral experimental con las curvas teóricas resultantes. Así, el software VIOFEK nos informa de una serie de parámetros (elasticidad, viscosidad, momento de inercia) útiles para el control exhaustivo de la cinemática palpebral.
