Mártires misioneros: una mirada a la traslación de modelo en América

Abstract

La imagen y el modelo de mártir se establecieron como parte del proceso de consolidación y expansión de la Iglesia Católica que, desde el cristianismo primitivo, pasando por la Edad Media y su fortalecimiento en los siglos XVI- XVIII, creó una sólida relación del discurso escrito, narrado y representado cumpliendo una función instructiva en cada ethos sacralizado en el que era implantado. La efectividad retórica de la producción y recepción de imágenes que circularon de ida y vuelta en los territorios europeos y americanos permitió el establecimiento del arquetipo de mártir y verdugo. En el caso de las misiones evangelizadoras de Franciscanos y Jesuitas en América, se trasladaron los valores simbólicos de la imagen y el modelo de víctima y victimario ajustadas al contexto propio del territorio y al hecho histórico de las misiones religiosas, siendo el mártir la encarnación de virtudes y la experiencia de fe cristiana, y verdugo, el Otro, que personificaba la amenaza agreste ante la expansión de la doctrina.

The image and model of the martyr were established as part of the process of consolidation and expansion of the Catholic Church which, from early Christianity, through the Middle Ages and its strengthening in the 16th-18th centuries, created a solid relationship between written discourse, narrated and represented fulfilling an instructive function in each sacred ethos in which it was implanted. The rhetorical effectiveness of the production and reception of images that circulated back and forth in European and American territories allowed the establishment of the archetype of martyr and executioner. In the case of the evangelizing missions of Franciscans and Jesuits in America, the symbolic values of the image and the model of victim and victimizer adjusted to the context of the territory and the historical fact of the religious missions were transferred, being the martyr the incarnation of virtues and the experience of Christian faith, and executioner, the Other, who personified the wild threat before the expansion of the doctrine.
