Abstract

They direct the festivities, the rituals and the offerings, they are in charge of restoring the health of those who get sick because they know the specific therapies for each disease, and they are also the ones who can to cause ills, because they make figures out of cut-out paper, which represent powerful sacred entities (nzaki) that can cause illnesses or cure them; through ecstatic experiences they manage to enter and leave the “other world”, where they face other “sorcerers” or “nahuales” and establish communication with sacred entities; in short, they are the ones who establish a ritual relationship with the “animas”, “diablos” and “antiguas”, to maintain the necessary natural and social balance in the Otomian cosmovisión.
