Tradición y academicismo en la Lleida de finales del siglo XVIII: Isidro Rogé y su Escuela de Matemáticas

Abstract

Con este trabajo pretendemos dar a conocer y reivindicar a uno de los maestros de obras, o arquitectos, más destacados de la Lleida de la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII e inicios del XIX. No es, precisamente, del que conservamos más obras documentadas, o templos proyectados, pero tiene la particularidad de haber propuesto al municipio la creación de una Escuela de Matemáticas, con la intención de instruir a los maestros, albañiles y peones, así como de mejorar la praxis arquitectónica de la ciudad. Esta iniciativa llega en un momento en que ni en Lleida, ni en los alrededores, había arquitectos académicos y, supuestamente, los maestros de obras carecían de ese tipo de formación, como se constatará en los reiterados rechazos de los proyectos presentados a la Academia de Madrid, aunque en el fondo subyace la voluntad de imponer un nuevo gusto artístico alejado de la superficialidad y exageración del barroco.

With this work we intend to make known and vindicate one of the most prominent master builders, or architects, of Lleida in the second half of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th. He is not known for having the most documented works, or projected temples, but for his particularity of having proposed to the municipality the creation of a Mathematics School, with the intention of instructing master builders, masons and laborers, as well as improving the architectural practice of the city. This initiative comes at a time when neither in Lleida, nor in the surrounding area, there were academic architects and, supposedly, the master builders lacked this type of training, as can be seen in the repeated rejections of the projects presented to the Academy of Madrid, although in the background laid the desire to impose a new artistic taste away from the superficiality and exaggeration of the baroque.
