Al servicio del culto eucarístico: las custodias procesionales en las hermandades sacramentales de Sevilla

Abstract

Fundadas desde comienzos del siglo XVI en las parroquias históricas de la ciudad, el triple carisma institucional de las hermandades sacramentales sevillanas consistió en dar culto público al Santísimo Sacramento, a la Inmaculada Concepción y a las ánimas benditas del purgatorio. La procesión de reserva de la Eucaristía en la liturgia del Jueves Santo, las de enfermos e impedidos durante el tiempo pascual y las celebradas en la infraoctava del Corpus Christi siguen constituyendo momentos álgidos en el calendario cultual de dichas corporaciones. Para estas últimas procesiones, de evidente tono triunfal en el espíritu de la Contrarreforma, así como para su utilización en los Monumentos de Semana Santa, las hermandades sacramentales hispalenses hicieron labrar en plata ricas custodias de asiento, de las que se conservan ejemplares desde comienzos del siglo XVII.

Founded since the beginning of the sixteenth century in the historic parishes of the city, the triple institutional charism of the Sevillian sacramental brotherhoods consisted of giving public worship to the Blessed Sacrament, the Immaculate Conception and the blessed souls of purgatory. The procession of reservation of the Eucharist in the liturgy of Holy Thursday, those of the sick and disabled during the Easter season and those celebrated in the infraoctava of Corpus Christi continue to constitute high moments in the cultural calendar of these corporations. For these last processions, of evident triumphal tone in the spirit of the Counter-Reformation, as well as for its use in the Monuments of Holy Week, the sacramental brotherhoods of Seville had rich seat monstrances carved in silver, of which examples are preserved since the beginning of the seventeenth century.
