Abstract

Este trabajo pretende avanzar en el análisis de las causas por las cuales el más exitoso modelo comercial de los primeros siglos de la modernidad, desarrollado en el Caribe hispano, entró en crisis de forma abrupta a los pocos años de haber comenzado su expansión. Un modelo que produjo las más importantes plusvalías en el contexto de la primera economía-mundo, base del capitalismo europeo: La más formidable circulación y acumulación de metales realizada en menos tiempo: 1580-1620. Pero también pretende explicar cómo se halló ante una crisis bien aguda, porque en apenas treinta años, y en el periodo inmediatamente posterior, entre 1620-1650, y por causas ajenas al mismo, éste modelo fue liquidado con sorpresiva celeridad.

This paper aims to advance in the analysis of the reasons why the most successful commercial model of the first centuries of modernity, developed in the Hispanic Caribbean, got into crisis abruptly within a few years after starting its expansion. A model that produced the most important capital gains in the context of the first world economy, the basis of European capitalism: The most formidable circulation and accumulation of metals in the shortest time: 1580-1620. But it also tries to explain how it faced a very acute crisis, because in just thirty years, and in the immediate aftermath, between 1620-1650, and for reasons beyond its control, this model was liquidated with unexpected celerity.
