Abstract
What causes the destruction of ruins, the loss of cultural assets with singular features (difficult legibility, fragility, problematic location, lack of use and maintenance...)?: Ignorance, neglect or negligence, abandonment, disaffection, looting, natural disasters, wars, historical, religious, cultural or ethnic “cleansing”, defiant propaganda, cultural nationalism, trafficking in works of art, the so-called social, urban or economic “progress”, and even complex and contradictory restorations. These are cultural assets that, dating from any era, have already been partially destroyed and have lost their original function and utility –although they may have acquired new ones. And yet, they sometimes hold such evocative power that, in extreme situations, they have even become targets of fanatics in recent conflicts.
