Cuerpo y modernidad: el proceso de estigmatización en las personas con diversidad funcional física

Abstract

Sobre la base biológica hay un cuerpo construido con una dimensión sociocultural importante. Este artículo precisamente analiza el cuerpo como un factor de la exclusión que padecen muchas personas con diversidad funcional física, en el contexto de las sociedades modernas actuales. Un contexto que se caracteriza por el predominio de unos valores corporales en torno a lo bello, lo hermoso, lo perfecto. Estos valores, a su vez, son asumidos por los individuos, que los interiorizan y asumen como propios de su sistema cultural, tratando de modelar su cuerpo para aproximarse a ese canon de belleza. Sin embargo, no me interesa ese cuerpo, sino aquel que se aleja del modelo referencial y, más concretamente, el de aquellas personas que son portadoras del estigma de la diversidad funcional (discapacidad), una circunstancia que, en numerosas ocasiones, las deja al margen de la sociedad en la que viven. Utilizaré el término diversidad funcional como una nueva manera de mirar las discapacidades.A body is built on a biological basis but nevertheless with a significant socio-cultural dimension. This work examines the body as a factor of the exclusion that many people with physical functional diversity endure, in the context of modern societies today. This context is characterised by a predominance of bodily values based on beauty, attractiveness, perfection. These values are at the same time taken on board by individuals, who interiorise them and accept them as in keeping with their cultural system, trying to mould their body so as to get as close as possible to the canons of beauty. However, I am not interested in that body, but rather the one that moves away from the reference model, more specifically that of those people who carry the stigma of functional diversity (disability), a circumstance which, often, leaves them outside the society in which they live. I shall use the term functional diversity as a new means of looking at disabilities.
