Abstract
». With these bitter words, Román de Espinosa complained about his economic situation after years working as a scribe for Francisco Sánchez “the Elder,” public notary of Dos Hermanas between 1538 and 1553. His role and circumstances were those of any scribe who formed part of the auxiliary staff of the public notaries' offices in the cities and towns of the former Kingdom of Seville during the 16th century. What distinguishes him from these other scribes is the interesting mark he left on every blank space or page in the notarial records of Dos Hermanas. A mark that manifested itself through various annotations, poems on a wide range of themes, caricatures, and even musical scores and notations, which clearly revealed his cultural interests and tastes. In this book we will analyze the years of Román de Espinosa's life that he spent in the notary's office of Dos Hermanas, showing in its pages that mark that we mentioned and that makes Espinosa a true paradigm (not to say the most outstanding case) of a notary who was part of the auxiliary staff of the public notaries.
