| dc.description.abstract | In all music where arrangement and text become complementary, topics evoking quotidian life can emerge. In this type of music literature, the feminine figure is often represented according to socio-cultural norms, which inform the notion of “woman” and its “feminine” attributes in order to produce a notion of masculinity in relation to it. This sociological construction in a central piece of the gender discourse most often evoked by the trova cubana genre. This chapter attends to hegemonic constructions of masculinity in trova lyrics as a gender sign that permeated the Cuban national consciousness. In contrast, those figures which elude the assigned behavioral codes of such discourse are considered treacherous, flirtatious, and vain. | |
