Abstract
In this article, I analyze the notions ofLatin Americanism and Latin American belonging that emerged in the context of the World’s Fair held in Paris in 1889, proposed by Aurelia Castillo, Mariano Coronado and Gabriel Carrasco. In general, studies on Latin American identity have focused primarily on genres such as the essay. Here, I propose to complement that perspective by focusing on a particular kind of reflection: that of visitors who attended an exhibition and shared an experience. From this experience arose reflections on LatinAmerican and the potential of a Latin American belonging that counterbalances other identities in tension, such as emergingPan-Americanism and Hispanic Americanism. I contextualize these chroniclers’ impressions within the framework of the World’s Fair held in Paris in 1889 which, like other exhibitions of its kind, served as privileged stage for producing readings of the world order and of national and transnational identities.
