Abstract
Sports have been identified as a key tool for developing essential soft skills for both life and the workplace. This study examines athletes’ perceptions of acquiring and transferring these skills through sports practice. The Life Effectiveness Questionnaire (LEQ), adapted for the sports context, was used to assess dimensions such as time management, social competence, achievement motivation, task leadership, emotional control, active initiative, intellectual flexibility, and self-confidence. Results show that participation in competitive sports predicts higher scores in these skills, while recreational and health-oriented sports display lower values. Moreover, weekly engagement in sports is the most relevant factor in acquiring these competencies, reinforcing the concept of serious leisure in sports as a driver of personal and professional development. Cultural differences in achievement motivation were also observed, with Spanish participants scoring lower compared to other nationalities. This study highlights the need to integrate sports into employability strategies to enhance labor market inclusion and transferable skills development.
