Y de pronto... Nueva España

Abstract

Seville and Triana, cities of sailors and travelers, are part of the Carrera de las Indias because of their privileged location at the mouth of the Grijalva river. Merchandise, travelers and adventurers formed the fleets in the bustle on the “river side” that would disembark in New Spain. The ships with their cargoes and crews consolidated the networks to sustain the commercial network of goods and products. In this paper we will see how the Hispanic viceroyalties overseas and, in particular, New Spain, opened up for the trade (tornaviaje) of artistic, ornamental or devotional objects. The testimonies are found in the inventories of household goods in Seville, where the furniture, accessories, and materials that were shipped from the port of San Juan de Ulúa and Vera Cruz to the Old World are listed. This universe of exchanges and dialogues are latent in cities on both sides of the ocean.

Sevilla dibujó sobre la fina línea de su horizonte la llamada “provincia” de Nueva España. Y cada primavera, por abril, auspiciaba la partida de una flota (“la Armada”) con los navíos bien pertrechados y sus tripulaciones dispuestas para el largo y venturoso trayecto. Los preparativos entrañaban numerosas tareas, incluyendo gestiones de índole económica, que procuraban la provisión, completaban las dotaciones de los navíos y sobre todo garantizaban la adecuación de éstos a la tarea encomendada. Triana fue la principal beneficiaria de todo lo que significaba avituallar la flota. Curiosamente en la mediación del XVII era esta flota, la novohispana, la que más quebraderos de cabeza provocaba a la población del barrio.
