Humor y política: los autorretratos del pintor Francisco Cortijo (1936-1996).

Abstract

Con el presente texto se pretende ensalzar la producción del artista sevillano Francisco Cortijo (1936-1996), analizando una de sus facetas más destacadas: el autorretrato. Si bien mediante el estudio de estas piezas, construidas a partir del sarcasmo y la política, se obtiene una clara visión de su evolución plástica, además, también arrojan luz sobre una personalísima percepción de la difícil realidad que corría en la España de los dos últimos tercios del siglo XX. Indudablemente, la producción de Cortijo, siempre ligada a su época, merece ser puesta en valor como una de las obras más comprometidas del panorama cultural sevillano, mediante la cual el artista alzó la voz. Este eco adquirió un interés especial en las piezas que aquí se analizan, en tanto que significaron toda una declaración por parte del pintor, representándose como un hombre de su tiempo.

The aim of this text is to highlight the work of the Sevillian artist Francisco Cortijo (1936-1996) by analysing one of its most outstanding facets: the selfportrait. Through the study of these works –constructed through sarcasm and political commentary– a clear vision of his artistic evolution emerges. At the same time, they shed light on a deeply personal perception of the difficult reality experienced in Spain during the final two thirds of the twentieth century. Undoubtedly, Cortijo’s production, always closely linked to its historical context, deserves recognition as one of the most politically engaged bodies of work within the Sevillian cultural landscape, through which the artist raised his voice. This expressive resonance is particularly evident in the works analysed here, as they constitute a powerful statement by the painter, who portrays himself as a man of his time.
