Abstract
Este artigo visa refletir sobre as contribuições do historiador da arte Germain Bazin, autor de textos fundamentais sobre a arquitetura e a arte do Brasil, para o fortalecimento do imaginário da nação brasileira proposto pelo Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (IPHAN). Pretende, também, colocar luzes ao seu vínculo com outro protagonista da historiografia da arte brasileira, Robert Chester Smith, estudioso com o qual Bazin compartilhou interesses e participou em ações que valorizaram a arte do país. O artigo se volta fundamentalmente à problematização do imaginário nacional brasileiro, entendido como necessariamente frutificado por meio de conexões internacionais que o chancelaram e o fortaleceram, como produto de ação cultural, de políticas patrimoniais e de redes intelectuais.

This article aims to reflect on the contributions of the art historian Germain Bazin, author of fundamental texts on Brazilian architecture and art, to the strengthening of the imaginary of the Brazilian nation proposed by the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute) (IPHAN). It also aims to shed light on his link with another protagonist of Brazilian art historiography, Robert Chester Smith, a scholar with whom Bazin shared interests and participated in actions that valorized the country’s art. The article fundamentally turns to the problematization of the Brazilian national imaginary, understood as necessarily fructified through international connections that chancelled and strengthened it, as a product of cultural action, heritage policies and intellectual networks.
