Abstract

The study is based on a qualitative analysis of the party press, parliamentary debatesand militant publications. It argues that the PSCh moved from an anti-imperialist Latin Americanism towards an anti-fascist and democratic internationalism. In an initial phase (1933–1935), the Chaco War and Mexican Cardenism served to develop critiques of imperialism and the agrarian structure. Subsequently (1936–1939), the Spanish Civil War and the Popular Front consolidated anti-fascism as a central organising principle.
