Violencia, inseguridad y participación electoral en México

Abstract

El presente artículo analiza las consecuencias de la violencia y la inseguridad sobre la democracia, circunscribiendo el análisis a la participación electoral en elecciones presidenciales en el caso de México. Se pretende descubrir si la violencia y la inseguridad condicionan el hecho de que los ciudadanos voten o se abstengan. Se plantean varias hipótesis afirmando que tanto indicadores objetivos como subjetivos de la seguridad afectan la intención de voto. Para su comprobación, se utiliza una metodología cuantitativa y el Barómetro de las Américas 2019. Tras someter a prueba empírica las hipótesis, se confirma que la ocurrencia de asesinatos en el barrio sí condiciona la decisión de votar o abstenerse en unas futuras elecciones presidenciales. Ello muestra que el voto por cuestiones de seguridad tendría carácter sociotrópico.This article analyzes the consequences of violence and insecurity on democracy, circumscribing the analysis to electoral participation in presidential elections in the case of Mexico. The aim is to discover whether violence and insecurity condition the fact that citizens vote or abstain. Several hypotheses are put forward stating that both objective and subjective indicators of security affect voting intention. In order to test them, a quantitative methodology and the Americas Barometer 2019 are used. After empirically testing the hypotheses, it is confirmed that the occurrence of murders in the neighborhood does condition the decision to vote or abstain in future presidential elections. This shows that voting on security issues would be sociotropic in nature.
