Abstract
Only since a very recent time, the New Cathedral of Cádiz has appeared in studies about his complex constructive process, the most of them concentrated in the first years and in the projects of Vicente de Acero. This attention has eclipsed the laters moments of his building, showing them as deprived of interest for the history of art. Nothing further from the truth, in this paper we focus on a controversy at the end of the XVIII century between different people related with its industry and, specially, in the paper will play there the bishop José Escalzo y Miguel (1780-1790).
