Abstract
This investigation analyzes, from a historical perspective, the link between Americanist academic research, especially in the fields of history and anthropology, and the establishment of museums. We deal with two projects in particular, both of which emerged from university settings at different junctures in the history of Spain, one in the 1940s, another in the 1990s. We compare (and contrast) these two moments with the permanent exhibition of the Museo de America as it was in each of those times. A third moment may be discerned that, in the 1960s, resembles an extension of the first, following the relocation of the American collections from the Museo Arqueológico Nacional to their present home. Drawing on published and unpublished literature, in addition to guides of the Museo de América as well as documents in its archive, we note the perpetuation of problems over the course of the period under examination, analyzing furthermore significant similarities and differences between project ideas and permanent exhibitions.
