Abstract The study examines the role of social work in providing guidance, support and recognition to informal carers of older people in El Viso del Alcor. The ageing population and the current rise in situation of dependency have highlighted the need for long-term care and underscored the importance of informal family care as the backbone of the welfare system. The study employs a qualitative methodology based on two semi-structured interviews with social work professionals linked to the municipality’s Community Social Services and Day Centre, analysing the main issues affecting carers, as well as the limitations of professional intervention. The results show that family carers, the majority of whom are women, experience a deterioration in their physical, emotional and social health. Similarly, factors such as bureaucracy, delays in decision-making and the lack of specific programmes aimed at carers’ self-care are identified. It is evident that social work plays a key role as a gateway for families, even though it is constrained by the system.
