Abstract
The present work is a study of a model of virtuous man in the Sevillian society of the baroque: the Mercedarian friar Juan Bernal. Various biographical accounts were written about him from his death in 1601 until well into the 17th century. His analysis allows us to establish a prototype of modern holiness: the martyr of charity. Result of the dissolution in a single mold of three previous elements: collected spirituality, compassion with the underprivileged and the desire for reform of the city. The preserved testimonies coincide in highlighting his word as the instrument that God granted him to carry out this mission reformer in Seville and redeemer in North Africa. The news we have of his sermons mark the stages of this life journey.
