Abstract

Corpus was one of the main festivities in Spain and New Spain. During this feast the individual and corporative hierarchies of society were deeply materialized. As their main devotion, the Blessed Sacrament confraternities played a major role during Corpus and displayed the objects and protocols that articulated their identities. In particular, this paper analyzes the signs of distinction that two Blessed Sacrament confraternities with Spanish members displayed in Mexico City during the Corpus that took place at the Metropolitan Cathedral and at La Santa Veracruz Church. What nuances, similarities, and differences can be identified in both celebrations within the context of the Bourbon Reforms? What connections can be established within the context of Seville?
