De aparición a institución: anatomía sociohistórica de la Iglesia Palmariana

Abstract

Esta investigación analiza sociológicamente la génesis y la institucionalización de la Iglesia Palmariana, un nuevo movimiento religioso (NMR) de origen católico, cismático y de proyección transnacional, surgido en El Palmar de Troya (Sevilla). El objetivo es comprender qué condiciones, prácticas y mecanismos sociales hicieron posible su creación y consolidación. Para ello se adopta un diseño cualitativo de estudio de caso etnográfico que triangula tres técnicas: el análisis documental de fuentes primarias y secundarias, cuatro sesiones de observación participante realizadas entre noviembre de 2025 y marzo de 2026, y una entrevista a informante experto. El marco teórico articula las nociones de campo religioso y monopolio de los bienes de salvación (Bourdieu), autoridad carismática y rutinización (Weber), institución total (Goffman) e institución voraz (Coser), junto con el mercado simbólico desecularizado. Los resultados describen el tránsito de la aparición a la institución: el carisma fundacional se rutinizó en un papado formal, mientras la doctrina, el ritual y la disciplina sellaron la autonomía del grupo, que hoy se reproduce más que recluta y custodia sus fronteras mediante el ostracismo. La propia imposibilidad de entrevistar a personas miembros se interpreta como un dato sociológico, coherente con el hermetismo de la comunidad. Se concluye que la articulación de un mercado simbólico abierto, una cultura aparicionista, un binomio de carisma y organización, y un régimen total de bienes de salvación explica la trayectoria del caso.

This research offers a sociological analysis of the genesis and institutionalization of the Palmarian Church, a schismatic new religious movement (NRM) of Catholic origin and transnational reach that emerged in El Palmar de Troya (Seville, Spain). It aims to understand which social conditions, practices and mechanisms made its creation and consolidation possible. The study adopts a qualitative ethnographic case-study design that triangulates three techniques: documentary analysis of primary and secondary sources, four participant-observation sessions carried out between November 2025 and March 2026, and an interview with an expert informant. The theoretical framework draws on the notions of the religious field and the monopoly over the goods of salvation (Bourdieu), charismatic authority and its routinization (Weber), the total institution (Goffman) and the greedy institution (Coser), together with the desecularized symbolic market. The findings trace the shift from apparition to institution: the founding charisma was routinized into a formal papacy, while doctrine, ritual and discipline sealed the group's autonomy. Today the community reproduces itself rather than recruiting, and guards its boundaries through shunning. The very impossibility of interviewing members is read as a sociological datum, consistent with the community's secrecy. The study concludes that an open symbolic market, an apparitionist culture, a pairing of charisma and organization, and a total regime of the goods of salvation account for the trajectory of the case.
