Abstract

In the Library of Hadrian at Athens are preserved a series of marble artifacts that, in addition to their purely architectural retain traces linked to their realization and subsequent use. Some are still in situ in the Roman building and they can be contextualized within a precise constructive chronology. For others, re-employed in the later stages of the Hadrian monument, when the complex becomes a Byzantine basilica, to track a context and a constructive meaning is more difficult. All cases that will be presented, however, return an image of some aspects of the working activity in ancient workshops: the know-how transfer for realization of marble architectural elements. Traces of the production process, large and small, show the way the craftsman visualized the finished product.
