Abstract
La artista Sofonisba Anguissola no fue solo una gran pintora, sino también una pintora reflexiva e inteligente, que dotaba a cada una de sus obras de un cuidado mensaje simbólico.
Todos sus cuadros, desde sus primeros autorretratos del periodo cremonense, nos hablan de una artista muy consciente del poder comunicativo de la pintura para reflejar distintos significados relacionados con la vida social o cortesana, la gente que trata y la época que le toca vivir.
En la corte española, las pinturas que realiza de la reina, sus hijas y, muy probablemente, algunas de las damas de compañía, las perlas sirven para expresar estatus. En otras obras, las perlas también pueden expresar noviazgo y matrimonio. Más adelante, ella también se representará llevando perlas como señal de haber alcanzado una posición social importante.

The artist Sofonisba Anguissola was not only a great painter; but also, a reflexive and intelligent one, that endowed each of her works with a carefully thought out symbolic message.
All her work from her first self-portraits of the Cremona period, speak of an artist very aware of the power of painting to communicate through images different meanings related to her social Court life, to the people she knew, and the times she lived.
In the Spanish Court, the paintings she does of the Queen, her children and (most probably) some of her ladies in waiting, pearls are used to express status. In some cases, they can also be associated to being engaged and marriage. In later life she will also represent herself wearing pearls as proof of having attained a high social standing.
