Del martirio a la imprenta: la misión en Japón en las relaciones de sucesos sevillanas

Abstract

A principios del siglo XVII las fronteras de la Monarquía Hispánica alcanzaban lugares tan lejanos y extraños para el común de los europeos como el Japón Tokugawa. Fue aquí donde, en las mismas fechas, las comunidades cristianas fundadas por el jesuita Francisco Javier, tan numerosas que resultaban peligrosas para el orden político, comenzaron a ser perseguidas, generando una prolífica literatura martirial que responde a los códigos barrocos de la época. El renacer de los relatos de martirios, al calor de la Contrarreforma, coincide con el desarrollo de unos géneros de imprenta de carácter informativo que trataban de satisfacer un público ávido de noticias. En las páginas siguientes, recopilamos y analizamos las relaciones de sucesos con las que la imprenta sevillana cubrió la actualidad del catolicismo en Japón.

At the beginning of the 17th century, the frontiers of the Spanish Monarchy reached places as distant and strange to the common European as Tokugawa Japan. It was here where, at the same time, the Christian communities founded by the Jesuit Francis Xavier, so numerous that they were dangerous for the political order, began to be persecuted, generating a prolific martyrdom literature that answered to the baroque codes of the time. The revival of martyrdom stories, in the heat of the Counter-Reformation, coincides with the development of informative print genres that tried to satisfy a news- hungry public. In the following pages, we will compile and analyze the reports of events with which the Sevillian printing press covered the current affairs of Catholicism in Japan.
