Notas sobre la lengua de los hebreos de La Línea y Gibraltar a finales del siglo XIX

Abstract

A finales del siglo XIX se había establecido firmemente una pequeña población hebrea en la ciudad de La Línea, fronteriza con la colonia británica de Gibraltar, donde, a su vez, había una población hebrea que se había afincado en ella a principios del siglo XVIII. Siendo la procedencia de ambas, en su mayor parte, el norte de África, trajeron consigo su lengua habitual, la haquetía. En este artículo presentamos algunos de los rasgos de esta lengua que los hebreos, tanto de La Línea y como de Gibraltar, conservaron, aunque es solo un esbozo ya que tenemos muy pocos testimonios. Con ello, documentamos el uso de la haquetía en el sur de España, aspecto que, hasta ahora, no había sido estudiado.

By the late 19th century, a small Jewish population had become firmly established in the town of La Línea, on the border with the British colony of Gibraltar, where there was also a Jewish population that had settled there in the early 18th century. Originating largely from North Africa, both communities brought with them their customary language, Haketia. In this article, we present some of the features of this language that the Hebrews of both La Línea and Gibraltar preserved, although it is merely an outline, as we have very few testimonies. Thus, we document the use of Haketia in southern Spain, an aspect that, until now, had not been studied.
