As mulheres nas artes da América Portuguesa: indígenas pintoras da região do Baixo Amazonas no Pará

Abstract

Em vista de contribuir para dar maior visibilidade ao tema das atividades artísticas das mulheres indígenas,1 na América Portuguesa, neste texto será apresentado um levantamento e uma análise de alguns relatos históricos da época da colonização — basicamente, crônicas de viajantes e jesuítas —, relacionando esses documentos com objetos artísticos reunidos pelo naturalista Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira durante a Viagem Filosófica na Amazônia (1783-1792), existentes em acervos portugueses2. Para isso, será estudado o caso da produção de tintas e vernizes, e a preparação e decoração de cuias, pelas mulheres ameríndias pintoras da região do Baixo Amazonas, sobretudo, da Aldeia de Gurupatuba, atual Monte Alegre no ParáIn order to give more visibility to the theme of the artistic activities of indigenous women in Portuguese America, this text will present a survey and an analysis of some historical accounts from the colonization period — basically, chronicles by travelers and Jesuits —, relating these documents with artistic objects existing in Portuguese collections, gathered by the naturalist Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira during his Philosophical Journey in the Amazon (1783-1792). For this, the case of the production of paints and varnishes, and the preparation and decoration of gourds, by Amerindian women painters from the Lower Amazon region, especially from Aldeia de Gurupatuba, currently Monte Alegre in Pará, will be presented.
