Andrés López y el Arte Maestra de la Nueva España, un discurso global en el proceso artístico de la pintura local del siglo XVIII

Abstract

Variadas fueron las fuentes de inspiración y aprendizaje de los pintores novohispanos, desde la tradición pictórica hasta libros impresos. Abordaremos el caso del tratado italiano llamado Arte Maestra que se tradujo al castellano en Nueva España en el siglo XVIII, significó una importante fuente de conocimiento para los pintores de esta centuria. Es por ello que, a partir de este tratado, demostraremos su posible aplicación en la obra La Asunción de María del pintor Andrés López ubicada en el templo de La Enseñanza de la Ciudad de México. Además, abordaremos las dinámicas globales y las de producción tanto en la Nueva España como en otras latitudes, así como la circulación e intercambio de imágenes y sus intenciones interpretativas y discursivas a partir de este artista, uno de los pintores más importantes de finales del siglo XVIII e inicios del XIX novohispano.

The sources of inspiration and learning for New Spain painters were varied, from the pictorial tradition to printed books. In this paper, we will address the study of the Italian treatise called L’Arte maestra (The Master Art), translated into Spanish in New Spain in the 18th century, and its importance as a primary source of knowledge for the painters of this century. In accordance to this, we will demonstrate its influence in the work “La Asunción de María” by painter Andrés López, located in the Temple of La Enseñanza in Mexico City. We will also address the global and production dynamics in the New Spain and in other latitudes, as well as the circulation and exchange of images and their interpretive and discursive intentions through the work of Andrés López, one of the most important painters at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century in New Spain.
