Escenas de la vida de Cristo, una serie pictórica realizada por Nicolás Correa: las singularidades de un conjunto técnicamente excepcional

Abstract

Nicolás Correa es el autor del conjunto de Escenas de la vida de Cristo, objeto de nuestro estudio, que suponen una interesante incorporación a su obra conocida. El artista era sobrino del prolífico autor Juan Correa cuya producción se fecha a finales del siglo XVII y principios del XVIII. Nicolás parece que se especializó en la pintura de enconchados: la delicada y sofisticada técnica artística de la pintura sobre concha, de evidente influencia oriental. Estas obras, técnicamente complejas, realizadas sobre paneles de madera de considerables dimensiones, se relacionan con los soportes que se emplean, en la época, para la elaboración de enconchados. Otras características técnicas estudiadas también nos hacen plantearnos la hipótesis de que pudiera tratarse de una serie ideada, en principio, para ser enconchados, que finalmente acabaron siendo tablas de pincel u obras pictóricas al óleo. Suponemos que, el elevado coste de esta delicada técnica pudo ser la causa del abandono del proyecto inicial. Estudiamos también el dibujo subyacente en estas pinturas, lo que nos permite cercarnos al poco conocido mundo del dibujo en los artistas novohispanos, así como profundizar en los procesos creativos de estos. Su análisis comparativo con el dibujo de obras del taller de los hermanos González, el otro gran obrador de la época, puede aportar datos claves para establecer nuevos criterios de atribución.

This series of Scenes from the life of Christ signed by Nicolás Correa is an important addition to his work. Nicolás was the nephew of Juan Correa whose artistic production are dated between the late 17th century and the early 18th century. Nicolás seems to have specialized in enconchados: a delicate mother-of-pearl inlaid painting technique, clearly influenced by an Eastern aesthetic. The paintings are technically complex. They are made with wooden panels of considerable dimensions in relation to the panel supports that are commonly used for the mother-of-pearl inlaid paintings. This fact and other technical characteristics reviewed in the present study led us to work with the hypothesis that these paintings were intended to be enconchados, but, finally, they ended up as tablas de pincel or oil on panel paintings, probably due to the great expense of that delicate procedure. We study, as well, the underlying drawing of the paintings which enables us to explore the unknown world of drawing in New Spain and as a result to learn more about the creative process of the Latin American artists. Also, we have compared the underlying drawing of works made in the other great workshop at that time: the one run by the González Brothers. The compiled information may open new paths in which to lay foundations for new attribution approaches.
